神様は現実のもので、その神聖な力を感じることができる。
「神様って本当にいるの？」という疑問は、多くの人がもっているものですね。「神様」の存在は信じないけど、「すべてをつかさどる偉大なパワー」が存在することはわかる、なんていう人もたくさんいます。前回も書きましたが、日本やインド、ギリシャをはじめその他様々な国に「なんとか神様」がやけにいっぱいいたりして、「神様」と一言でいっても、何がなんだかよくわからない状態になっています。いろいろな国の土俗信仰で、雨の神様とか、太陽の神様とかを祭ることがありますが、これらは皆、人間が全知全能の神様を求めるよりも、手短に見える木や泉を「神様」のかわりに崇めたりした偶像崇拝です。聖書には、はっきりと誰が神様なのか書かれています。使徒言行録には、パウロがアテネではびこる偶像崇拝に憤慨して説教している様子が書かれています。聖書を持っている方は、新約聖書の使徒言行録第17章の16節から34節までを読んでみましょう。ここでは、重要な箇所だけ抜きだして書きます。
17:16-18 パウロはアテネで２人を待っている間に、この町の至る所に偶像があるのを見て憤慨した。それで、会堂ではユダヤ人や神をあがめる人々と論じ、また、広場では居合わせた人々と毎日論じ合っていた。また、エピクロス派やストア派の幾人かの哲学者もパウロと討論したが、その中には、「このおしゃべりは、何が言いたいのだろうか」と言う者もいれば、「彼は外国の神々の宣伝をする者らしい」と言う者もいた。パウロが、イエスと復活について福音を告げ知らせていたからである。
Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him. Then certain philosophers of the Epocureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? Other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.
17:22-25 パウロは、アレオパゴスの真ん中に立って言った。「アテネの皆さん、あらゆる点においてあなたがたが信仰のあつい方であることを、わたしは認めます。道を歩きながら、あなたがたが拝むいろいろなものを見ていると、『知られざる神に』と刻まれている祭壇さえ見つけたからです。それで、あなたがたが知らずに拝んでいる者、それをわたしはお知らせしましょう。世界とその中の万物とを造られた神が、その方です。この神は天地の主ですから、手で造った神殿などにはお住みになりません。また、何か足りないことでもあるかのように、人の手によって仕えて貰う必要もありません。すべての人に命と息と、その他すべてのものを与えて下さるのは、この神だからです。
Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars'hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I fond an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
17:26-29 神は、１人の人からすべての民族を造り出して、地上の至る所に住まわせ、季節を決め、彼らの居住地の境界をお決めになりました。これは、人に神を求めさせるためであり、また、彼らが探し求めさえすれば、神を見いだすことができるようにということなのです。実際、神は私たち一人ひとりから遠く離れてはおられません。皆さんのうちのある詩人たちも、『我らは神の中に生き、動き、存在する』『我らもその子孫である』と、言っている通りです。わたしたちは神の子孫なのですから、神である方を、人間の技や考えで造った金、銀、石などの像と同じものと考えてはなりません。
And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hat determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: for in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.
17:30-32 さて、神はこのような無知な時代を、大目に見てくださいましたが、今はどこにいる人でも皆悔い改めるように、と命じておられます。それは、先にお選びになった１人の方によって、この世を正しく裁く日をお決めになったからです。神はこの方を死者の中から復活させて、すべての人にそのことの確証をお与えになったのです。」死者の復活ということを聞くと、ある者はあざ笑い、ある者は「それについては、いずれまたきかせてもらうことにしよう」と言った。
And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the worked in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.
ここでいう「先にお選びになった１人の方」というのは、もちろんイエス・キリストのことです。ペテロは、イエス・キリストの十字架の上での殉教と復活、そしてそれに伴って人類の罪が洗い流された福音を、偶像崇拝に夢中だったアテネの人々に説いたわけです。ある人たちは信じて救われ、ある人たちはペテロをばかにし、ある人たちは理解したものの、その福音を受け取ろうとはしませんでした。このような人間の反応は、世界中どこにいっても、今も昔もかわりません。ちなみに旧約聖書にも、偶像と本当の神様の違いがはっきりと書かれています。エレミヤ書の10章1節から16節を読んでみてください。
エレミヤ書10:10 主は真理の神、命の神、永遠を支配する王。The LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king.
10:14-16 人は皆、愚かで知識に達しえない。金細工人は皆、偶像のゆえに辱められる。鋳て造った像は欺瞞に過ぎず、霊をもっていない。彼らは空しく、また嘲られるもの、裁きの時がくれば滅びてしまう。ヤコブの分である神は、このような方ではない、万物の創造者である
Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them. They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish. The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all things.
私たち人間が信じようと信じまいと、聖書に記されていることは神様の御言葉であり、真実です。ヨハネの手紙１にはこう書いてあります。
ヨハネの手紙１
5:1 イエスがメシアであると信じる人は皆、神から生まれた者です。
Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God.
5:3-5 神を愛するとは、神の掟を守ることです。神の掟は難しいものではありません。神から生まれた人は皆、世に打ち勝つからです。世に打ち勝つ勝利、それはわたしたちの信仰です。誰が世に打ち勝つか。イエスが神の子であると信じる者ではありませんか。
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
5:10-12 神の子を信じる人は、自分の内にこの証しがあり、神を信じない人は、神が御子についてなさった証しを信じていないため、神を偽り者にしてしまっています。その証しとは、神が永遠の命をわたしたちに与えられたこと、そして、この命が御子の内にあるということです。御子と結ばれている人にはこの命があり、神の子と結ばれていない人にはこの命がありません。
He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hat made him a liar: because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
5:19-21 わたしたちは知っています。私たちは神に属する者ですが、この世全体が悪い者の支配下にあるのです。私たちは知っています。神の子が来て、真実な方を知る力を与えて下さいました。わたしたちは真実な方の内に、その御子イエス・キリストの内にいるのです。この方こそ、真実の神、永遠の命です。子たちよ、偶像を避けなさい。
And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in Him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
私も日本で普通に育っていくなかで、何も考えずに神社でお稲荷さんとか、お寺で地蔵とか（？）なんとかの建物で恋愛の神様だなんだと、半信半疑で一応祈ってきましたが、本当の神様って誰なのか説明されたことは一度もありませんでした。けれど、聖書にははっきりとすべてを司る神様のことが書かれていて、誰にお祈りすればいいのかきっちり教えてくれます。また、イエス様を通して天国に行く道を示してくれているのだから、なんて素晴らしい福音だ！と思っちゃいますね。よく必読書のことをナントカのバイブル、なんていう言い方をしますが、聖書は本当に人生のバイブルです！皆さんも是非本当の神様を信じ、イエス様に天国への道へ導いてもらいましょう。
